Richard Davis, Vanguard Consulting
Vanguard
has a reputation for being strongly opposed to many government-promulgated initiatives.
Their leader, John Seddon, describes 'best value' as 'bad measures with no method'.
Vanguard have also been critical of the EFQM Excellence Model and ISO 9000.
While many will know of Vanguard's reputation for being 'anti' things, few know
what Vanguard like.
The short answer is systems thinking, which they describe as 'the better way
to make work work'.
Systems
thinking began in manufacturing, in particular in Toyota. Today the number of
man-hours it takes to build a Lexus is less than the man-hours used in repairing
top-of-the-line luxury cars in other manufacturers.
Vanguard leads the field in applying systems thinking to service organisations.
The ideas are deceptively simple, but do rely on managers (and consultants)
being prepared to change the way they think.
Richard
will lead what will be a thought-provoking and very practical day, showing how
systems thinking has been and can be applied to public sector performance improvement.
